Day of Service 2021

On August 21st, 2021, African American Alliance for Homeownership (AAAH) and the Rebuilding Center (RBC) joined forces once again for the annual Day of Service. The Day of Service provides important home repairs for long-standing North/Northeast Portland residents, in an effort to further home retention and combat displacement. Working together, AAAH and RBC reached out to homeowners living in Portland’s Interstate Corridor. The seven homes chosen to participate belong to North/Northeast Portland residents, who are either seniors, low-income homeowners, or both.

Small workgroups of volunteers were formed for each site. Under the guidance of their team leader, these volunteers painted, cleaned gutters, installed locks and handrails, and did extensive landscaping- successfully clearing away countless bags of yard debris. The generous donation of time and energy from our volunteers makes a significant difference in the daily lives of these homeowners, many of whom came out to meet the work teams and offer their thanks.

Despite obstacles posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, our work groups were able to safely complete many valuable home improvements, and a fun time was had by all. The African American Alliance for Homeownership and the Rebuilding Center were happy to provide this opportunity for the community to come together safely once again. This event was sponsored by the Consolidated Community Credit Union (CCCU).
